Please Note: Most emergency shelters DO NOT allow pets!

Most of you care about your pets, and realize it is your responsibility to protect them. Thousands of pets were victims of Hurricane Katrina, and other major storms that hit the Gulf Coast . Many were lost, some were reunited with their owners, but many more were killed or abandoned with no attempts made by their family to find them.

Below are some steps you can take to assure your pets will be safe:

I.D. YOUR PET
Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and tag, with the pets name, your name, address and emergency phone and cell numbers to make it easy to locate you. These tags are available at pet supply and discount stores. Many Veterinarians can also MICROCHIP your pet. The pets information can be accessed via registration of a numbered microchip painlessly implanted under the skin and scanned by shelters, vet clinics and rescue organizations like BCHS.

BRING ALL PETS INSIDE BEFORE THE STORM
Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and tag, with the pets name, your name, address and emergency phone and cell numbers to make it easy to locate you. These tags are available at pet supply and discount stores. Many Veterinarians can also MICROCHIP your pet. The pets information can be accessed via registration of a numbered microchip painlessly implanted under the skin and scanned by shelters, vet clinics and rescue organizations like BCHS.

EVACUATING?
If you plan to leave, make arrangements well in advance if you need to board your pets at a Veterinary Clinic or boarding kennel. In the event of a severe storm, Clinics and Boarding Kennels may not accept pets.
